Gender and Development
by Rowell D. Alarcon
Oh no, MACHO days are over! Our rights as a person are not defined by gender preferences. Gone are the days when men are the only one who’s working. Gone are the days when women just stay at home. Gone are the days that members of LGBT are being discriminated.
Gender equality refers to equal rights, responsibilities, and opportunities that all persons should enjoy, regardless of whether one is born male or female or in between.
Providing a better education for women or for LGBT community does not mean neglecting or suppressing men. By placing men, women and gays on an equal level, the relatively increased valuing of women and gays will also benefit men by informing them of the strengths, capabilities and contributions of members of the opposite sex.
Gender Development as an idea, will still be a long journey. But seeing my wife, my mom, my two lovely daughters, it is my moral obligation to spread , address and focus on the basis of differences between men and women, and the need to challenge existing gender roles and relations. We must change some traditions and cultures.
Oh yes, MACHO days are really over! And it should be, the perfect time for Gender Equality is definitely NOW.
